Julie Kalivretenos is the owner and writer of Julie’s Raw Ambition, an online digest of natural food gourmet. Julie’s enthusiam for healthy fresh foods are a part of a beautiful lifestyle we all should incorporate into our lives. She is one of the most unique, inspiring women on the net. But what is obvious is her beauty inside and out.
Here’s an interview with Julie about makeup, childhood memories, and what she thinks is real beauty.
1. Do you have a fond or strange memory involving makeup during childhood or teenage years? Do you think it’s shaped how you use or view makeup now?
I’ve always been quite a glamour puss and couldn’t wait to start wearing make-up. Although I can appreciate his reasoning now, my Dad wouldn’t allow it when I was in 6th grade and just starting middle school. The 80’s trend of having the whole rainbow spectrum on your eyes with Joan Jett eyeliner was coming in full force and I just could NOT be “uncool”. I’d sneak Maybelline make-up to school and put it on on the bus and then wash it off at my BFF’s house next door before going home. The lengths girls will go! I think this whole experience later taught me to appreciate the whole “less is more” concept. Not just in make-up application, but 11 year-old girls shouldn’t be in such a hurry to grow up!

2. Name 1 – 3 favorite makeup/beauty products you can’t live without.
Dior Mascara. Stila cheek tint in a pot. Alba Terra gloss for lips. My eyebrows can always grow back if I can stop plucking at them!
3. Do you have a bedtime beauty routine? Favorite nighttime ritual
I always, always use my Clarisonic massaging brush to cleanse my face. It’s amazing because it truly cleans the pores and keeps them unclogged. Plus it feels really nice! Also, I use raw coconut butter as my moisturizer. It’s totally natural, costs a lot less than expensive designer creams, and despite how it sounds it doesn’t make your skin greasy or clog your pores.
4. They say true beauty lies underneath. Name what characteristic about you or others that you think is beautiful. Something makeup can’t do.
You know, that’s the toughest question of all, but it’s so true. Many of us look to outside sources to make ourselves look better and therefore, feel better. It’s easy to credit certain types of make-up or fashions for looking great. And I’m not saying it’s all in vain either – make-up and fashion are also products of creativity! I believe that love is the only emotion of truth and it’s the foundation of all things beautiful. The truly most beautiful people are those who love themselves and practice positivity in all areas of their lives as a result. This isn’t about being perfect, either. At times it seems difficult when our self-esteem is tested through certain events in life. But if we’re emitting negativity from the inside, or denying love in our hearts, there’s no amount of make-up that can create a facade of beauty – at least not for long.
